The Tupperwares T-shirt Signed by Tomata du Plenty and Rio de Janeiro
This band t-shirt for the Tupperwares with iron on lettering is is signed “To Steve” by two members of the Tupperwares, Tomata du Plenty (David Xavier Harrigan, 1948-2000) and Rio de Janeiro (David Gulbransen, birthdate unknown).
The Tupperwares was formed in 1975 as a collision between post-glam, performance art of Ze Whiz Kidz and garage punk. Band members were Tomata du Plenty, Melba Toast (Tommy Gear, birthdate unknown) and Rio de Janeiro. They were instrumental figures in the burgeoning scene and on May 1, 1976, played the first show booked, promoted, and played entirely by punks in Seattle.
Tiring of the Seattle scene, singers Tomata du Plenty and Melba Toast (soon to be renamed Tommy Gear) moved to Los Angeles in 1976 and connected with musicians David Brown and K.K. Barrett, changing their name from the Tupperwares to the Screamers and switching to synthesizers in place of guitars. They produced frenetic, driving synth beats coupled with Du Plenty's screamed vocals. They quickly became one of the most popular bands in the early Los Angeles scene, selling out shows at venues such as the Whisky a Go Go and the Roxy. The combination of intense songwriter Tommy Gear and irresistible front man Tomata Du Plenty was unstoppable – until they drifted away from the scene in 1980 without ever releasing a record.
