Aquemini is the third studio album by Hip-Hop duo Outkast. Aquemini was released on September 29, 1998, by LaFace Records. The title is a combination of the two performers' Zodiac signs: Aquarius (Big Boi) and Gemini (André 3000), which is indicative of the album's recurring theme of the differing personalities of the two members. The group recorded much of the album in Bobby Brown's Bosstown Recording Studios and Doppler Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. Aquemini was certified Platinum in 1998 and went certified double Platinum in 1999. Aquemini magnifies on outer space-inspired compositions of Afrofuturism by integrating live instrumentation and drawing on 1970s funk, southern soul, gospel, country and psychedelic rock to create their unique Southern Hip-Hop sound.
OutKast is a Southern Hip-Hop duo formed in 1992 in East Point, Georgia. The duo consists of Atlanta-based rappers André 3000/Dré (André Lauren Benjamin, b. 1975) and Big Boi (Antwan André Patton, b. 1975). OutKast is one of the most successful Hip-Hop groups of all time, winning six Grammy Awards and with the release of six studio albums and a greatest hits release. Outkast has sold over 20 million records. As key members of the Dungeon Family and working with East Point producers Organized Noize, OutKast achieved success from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, helping to curate the legacy of Dirty South Hip-Hop music.
