Text EntriesFreaknik was an annual spring break street festival and party that took place in Atlanta, Georgia from 1983 to 1999. It was initially a small gathering of college students from historically black colleges and universities from the Atlanta area but grew into a massive event attracting over 300,000 people annually. Freaknik was often associated with negative stereotypes, however it was a celebration of African American culture and a symbol of unity for the black college community. Due to the event’s size and popularity the festival included dance contests, concerts, basketball tournaments, rap sessions, a film festival and a job fair. Today, the legacy of Freaknik continues to be remembered as a defining moment in Hip-Hop and African American culture in the 1990s.
