Buttercup's Fire Swamp Dress from the Film "The Princess Bride"
Overall (HWD) (Belt): 2 1/4 × 32 1/4 in. (5.715 × 81.915 cm)
This red dress was worn by actress Robin Wright in the film The Princess Bride (1987).
It is known as the "Fire Swamp" dress from the scene where the two protagonists, Buttercup and Wesley, must traverse the Florin-Guilder Fire Swamp known for three dangers: flame spurts, lightning sand (faster than quicksand), and rodents of unusual size.
The story itself is a satirical fairy tale about love, friendship, loss, and loyalty. Based on the 1973 book by William Goldman (1931-2018), The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, The 'Good Parts' Version, it was adapted for the screen by the author and only has a few differences—like a lack of shrieking eels in the book (it was sharks Princess Buttercup had to escape).
The film's costume designer Phyllis Dalton (b. 1925) has also designed for films such as Lawrence of Arabia (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Much Ado About Nothing (1993). She has won numerous British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and Academy Awards (Oscars) for her work.
