This upright piano was used by musician and songwriter, Elliott Smith (1969–2003). Smith first came to

prominence in the early 1990s with Portland, Oregon-based band Heatmiser. In 1994, Smith recorded his debut solo album Roman Candle, featuring a singer-songwriter-influenced sound markedly different from the grunge and indie rock popular at the time. Across five albums, and until his untimely death in 2003, Smith’s solo work resonated with fans in the Pacific Northwest and around the world, highlighting his accomplished songwriting, intricate melodies, melodic voice, and evocative, melancholy lyrics.

Smith used this 1919 Cable upright piano during recording sessions in 1997 and 1998 with Larry Crane and Joanna Bolme at Jackpot! Recording Studio in Portland. It can be heard on many songs, including his Oscar-nominated breakout hit “Miss Misery” (featured in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting), “Baby Britain” and “Amity” (both released on XO, 1998), as well as many demos.

Gray upright piano with worn wood and chipped paint throughout, two peddles, three rectangles on the upright panel. “Cable” and the outline of a lyre is in yellow in the middle of the fallboard.
