Text EntriesOne of the founding members of the Skatalites and an instrumental figure in the evolution of Jamaican mento, ska, rocksteady, and reggae, Jerome “Jah Jerry” Hynes’ (1921-2007) jazz-influenced chording appeared on hundreds of recordings for Prince Buster, Coxsone Dodd, and other top Jamaican producers from the 1960s – 1990s. Hynes can be seen playing this c. 1960 Höfner Senator guitar in the 1983 film Deep Roots Music, one of the first television documentaries to take a serious look at Jamaican music.
Heavily worn hollowbody electric guitar. Pickguard celluloid deformed due to age. F-shaped soundhole directly below the pickguard has been damaged by rodent activity. General wear and corrosion on all metal surfaces. Original tailpiece replaced by a Bigsby tremelo unit. A stage pass is adhered to the body on the back upper right side above the waist of the guitar. Handwritten on the pass is “JAH JERRY 23 + SAT. 24.”
