This set list shows the performers and songs scheduled for the opening concert at the weeklong International Pop Underground Convention in Olympia, Washington. The show was originally dubbed “Love Rock Revolution Girl Style Now” but became known as “Girl Day,” a showcase dedicated to women in Punk and Indie Rock. Olympia’s K Records sponsored the convention, bringing together disparate elements of the underground music scene and solidifying a network of bands, critics, and fans throughout the rest of the 1990s.
“Girl Day” is considered a watershed in Riot Grrrl history, a subculture, feminist, punk movement started in the 1990s in Olympia, Washington and the Pacific Northwest, since several of the performances marked the beginning of promising music careers. Heavens to Betsy played their first show with Corin Tucker emerging from that band to co-found the quintessential Riot Grrrl group, Sleater-Kinney, in 1994. Also debuting were the Spinanes, a duo from Portland, Oregon, consisting of Rebecca Gates and Scott Plouf, later of Built to Spill. Other artists appearing that night included Jean Smith of Mecca Normal, Kreviss, Bratmobile, Lois, 7 Year Bitch, and Tobi Vail of Bikini Kill.
