This dress was worn by actor and singer Judy Garland (born Frances Ethel Gumm, 1922-1969) in the 1939 Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer (MGM) film The Wizard of Oz. The dress was designed by MGM’s Chief Costume Designer Gilbert Adrian (born Adrian Adolph Greenburg, 1903-1959) who designed all the costumes for this film and for hundreds of other MGM films during his career at the studio (1928-1941).

Few films live in the global pop culture zeitgeist quite like The Wizard of Oz. Based on the L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) book series, the 1939 film starred Judy Garland and was directed by Victor Fleming (1889-1949). The Wizard of Oz created a viral sensation before the internet was even a thing—and continues to impact pop culture 85 years later, spawning adaptations, social media content, fan fiction, and more.

Light blue and white gingham-checked, mid-calf, pinafore-style dress with full skirt and fitted bodice worn over a cream-colored blouse with blue decorations around the high, gathered collar and short, puffed sleeves.
