Text EntriesThis is a six-page typed excerpt from the original manuscript from the novel Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand by Samuel R. Delany, originally published in 1984. MoPOP accession number 2006.17.1.A is the first page of the series. These six pages were not included in the final draft of the novel. It is considered by some to be a masterpiece in blending many of the topics pervasive in Science Fiction; multiculturalism, technology, the effects of globalization and industrialization on environment, class disparity, gender, sexuality, and the effect technology has on all realms of existence. The novel is an exploration of a civilization that encompasses over 6,000 worlds and touches on topics and concerns that arise when so many dynamically diverse cultures interact.
A stapled six-page typewritten document. The pages are standard size, 8.5 x 11 sheets. Pages are yellowed and attached by a single staple in the upper left corner. The page numbers on the 5 subsequent pages are notated in the upper right-hand corner. The indentation is unusual in style as it indents short one-line sentences and yet does not indent the second line of longer sentences.
