Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Sir Patrick Stewart (b. 1940), most often appears as the captain of the starship USS Enterprise as part of the Star Trek franchise. Picard has appeared in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Borg, is a pseudo-species of cybernetic humanoids, drones or cyborgs originating from the Delta Quadrant. Within the Borg Collective, no single individual truly existed as the cyborgs were interconnected in a hive mind that allowed the sharing of information from every drone assimilated into the collective. Their ultimate objective was the pursuit of 'perfection' achieved through forcibly assimilating diverse sentient species, technologies, and knowledge, which were incorporated into the hive mind. As a result, the Borg became one of the galaxy's most powerful and feared entities, although they weren't a conventional species. The introduction of the Borg into the Star Trek series changed the course of the show, pleasing both showrunners and audiences. Within the series, the Borg posed as one of the greatest threats to the Federation and Starfleet, not only due to their technological advancements but also their ruthlessness.

The significance of Picard's assimilation led to its frequent recurrence in The Next Generation, providing Star Trek with more complex villains. Picard's brief span as Locutus reshaped the entire Star Trek universe. Assimilated by the Borg for just six days, Picard's role as captain of Starfleet’s flagship gave the Borg critical insights, rendering the Federation powerless. In which this event defined Picard's character, with its repercussions appearing through various episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: First Contact, and all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard.
