The album introduced listeners to Common's early style of rapping. His early style of rhyme and lyricism contained heavy vocal delivery, word play and pop culture allusions. Throughout the 90s and early 2000s Common achieved mainstream success through his membership with the Soulquarians, a Hip-Hop and R&B Collective of Black music artist such as Erykah Badu, Mos Def, Q-Tip, J Dilla and Questlove.

Relativity is printed in black and white font on a opposing yellow and black triangular background.
