LL Cool J (James Todd Smith, b. 1968) is a rapper and actor from Long Island, New York. LL Cool J took the name LL Cool J (“Ladies Love Cool James”) and signed with the rap label Def Jam in 1984 at age 16. His first single, “I Need a Beat,” sold more than 100,000 copies. As a two-time Grammy Award winner, LL Cool J is known for songs such as "Rock the Bells", "Mama Said Knock You Out", "Doin' It", "I Need Love", and "Around the Way Girl". In 2017, LL Cool J became the first rapper to receive the Kennedy Center Honors and in 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with an award for Musical Excellence. LL Cool J was an early Hip-Hop artist to achieve mainstream success and one of the few Hip-Hop stars of his era to sustain a successful recording career for more than a decade with his music and acting career.
