The Roots are a Hip-Hop band formed in 1987 by Black Thought (Tariq Trotter, b. ) and Questlove (Ahmir Thompson, b.) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Roots are known for their jazzy sound and eclectic approach to Hip-Hop with their live musical instrumentation. With a long list of members that have spand the band’s history, some of their members include; Kamal Gray, Captain Kirk Douglas, Damon "Tuba Gooding Jr." Bryson, Jeremy Ellis, Rahzel, Scratch, Scott Storch, Ray Angry, James Poyser, Mark Kelley, Stro Elliot, Dave Guy and Ian Hendrickson-Smith. The Roots have been serving as the house band on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon since 2009. The Roots constantly raised instrumentals in Hip-Hop music and culture as one of the most influential Hip-Hop collectives of all time as a three-time Grammy Award-winning multiplatinum group.
