This reel-to-reel tape box contained the master tape for Seattle band Mudhoney’s single “You Got It (Keep It Out of My Face)” backed with “Burn It Clean.” The band recorded the single at Reciprocal Studio in Seattle, Washington where much of the music that emerged in the city’s grunge explosion was captured. Released in the spring of 1989, both songs showcase the essence of grunge rock and highlight the distance that many of its artists felt from the mainstream music industry. The box was intended for Sub Pop Records then to Erika Records, a music manufacturer.
Mark Arm (b. 1962) and lead guitarist Steve Turner (b. 1965) had been members of the band Green River, whose break-up led to the formation of Mudhoney and Mother Love Bone. Mudhoney’s members played for various bands throughout their careers. Drummer Dan Peters (birthdate unknown). played at one time for Bundle of Hiss and Nirvana, while bassist Matt Lukin (b. 1964) played for the Melvins. Known for their big riffs, distorted guitars, powerful and often screamed vocals, rumbling bass and a garage-rock foundation, the band was Sub Pop Record’s best seller prior to 1991.
Sub Pop was founded by Bruce Pavitt (b. 1959) and Jonathan Poneman (b. 1959) around 1986 as an independent record label. They became well known for signing grunge bands such as Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Soundgarden among others.
