The Brothers Disco and The Grandmaster Flash and The Furious IV M.C.s, at the Webster P.A.L., New York, NY, May 11, 1979

This poster advertises a performance at the Bronx's Webster P.A.L.  The event was the first competition between DJ Breakout and Grandmaster Flash.  The poster lists the original members of Brothers Disco:  DJ Breakout, DJ Baron (Baron Chappell), and the MCs of the Funky Four—Rahiem, K.K. Rockwell, Keith Keith, and Sha Rock.  Tony Tone, who later became a DJ for the Cold Crush Brothers, was also a member of Brothers Disco at this time.  DJ Grandmaster Flash is listed on the bill with his crew of rappers, the Furious IV MCs, which consisted of Melle Mel, Kid Creole, Keith Keith, and Mr. Ness.  Keith Keith of the Furious IV later distinguished himself from the Funky Four MC of the same name by changing his name to Keith Cowboy. 

The performance lasted throughout the night with Brothers Disco appearing first, followed by Grandmaster Flash and then by Furious IV.  Brothers Disco's Rahiem was dismayed with fellow members of the Funky Four MCs whom he thought had become dispirited and given up.  Grandmaster Flash had his MCs perform a new dance routine that drove the crowd wild.  Flash and his crew were declared the victors in the evening's battle.  That night Rahiem left the Funky Four and soon afterward joined Flash's crew, thus forming the celebrated Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.  Sha Rock also left the Funky Four that night but rejoined the group a few months later.  This was the first battle between the two groups, but not the last.

A few months after their defeat at the P.A.L., Brothers Disco settled on a new line up of MCs.  They held auditions and added Lil Rodney C and Jazzy Jeff.  Although still under the umbrella of Brothers Disco, this new lineup of MCs was called the Funky 4 Plus 1 More.  Both Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five and the Funky 4 Plus 1 later recorded with Sugar Hill Records.
