This flyer advertises the second official Seattle Dyke March, held on June 24, 1995. In those early years, inspired by similar lesbian marches held in New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., participants walked around the Lincoln Reservoir near Broadway Playfield. This area was renamed Cal Anderson Park in 2003 In honor of Washington’s first openly gay legislator, who died with AIDS in 1995. From 1999 until 2023, participants gathered at Seattle Central College’s plaza at Broadway and Pine on the Saturday of the city’s pride weekend, followed by a march. Seattle Dyke March is the longest-running pride event that has continuously taken place on Capitol Hill and has a unique focus on political activism and dyke-identified speakers and performers and has continued to welcome all queer women. In 2023, march organizers found a new, unpermitted route around Volunteer Park, explicitly avoiding the police presence found on Capitol Hill during Pride and which can be deemed necessary by SPD for permitted events.
Small white flyer, on printer paper, with a circle of women’s faces around a triangle drawing which says “dyke power” in bubble letters. Typed text says “Dyke March, June 24, 1995, gather at Broadway Playfield at 7 pm, rally, march, dance, for information call 233-1006.” Beneath text, “ASL interpreted” is written in pen.
